Climate Related Threats Global warming will lead to uncontrollable devastation such as famine, war, and economic instability. Climate change will accelerate the dislocation of hundreds of millions of people and the extinction of many species. The negative effects of climate change are obvious on every continent. The Selfish Hedonist Free Essays

In The Canterbury Tales, the Wife of Bath, also known as Alison, presents herself as the authority on marriage and marital life. She comments on the social and legal position of women in marriage and daily life. After telling the unreasonable details of her relationships, she goes on to tell a tale about an old hag and one of King Arthur’s knights. The old hag forces the knight to marry her after she helps him with a life-saving question of â€Å"What do women most want in life? The Wife of Bath attempts to portray the idealness of a woman’s domination in the end yet she fails because the old hag becomes passive again. Through the Wife of Bath’s Prologue and Tale in The Canterbury Tales, Geoffrey Chaucer portrays the Wife of Bath as a selfish hedonist and feminist trying to gain complete control over men. Her new stand on women’s supremacy only shows her selfishness because she wasn’t trying to make a difference or revolutionize anything, she was only trying to gain personal benefits. The Wife of Bath’s prologue is used to explain the basis of her theories on authority and sovereignty. The medieval Church at the time of the Wife of Bath saw her as a wicked woman, and she boasts about it with pride: â€Å"If I turn difficult, God give me sorrow! † (262). â€Å"Her marrying three old men in succession is a violation of not only of the law of common sense but even of the law of Nature, who would bring together those of comparable age† (Oberembt 288). Marrying another man after already being married previously is already a scandalous crime for this time period. Now to marry someone much older than herself a few times in a row is wrong not only in the eyes of God, but it is wrong along the lines of common sense too. The text of the Wife of Bath’s Prologue is based on an allegorical ‘confession’ in which she tells her sins to her audience in her life story: â€Å"O Lord, I wrecked their peace / innocent they were, without remorse! † (Chaucer 268). She confesses to deceiving and tricking her husbands just so she could get money and admits to arrange a fifth marriage while still in her fourth. In doing so, she demoralizes herself to try to be better than a man. Having more power than a man means she gets to decide, yet she goes and ruins her own reputation just so she can have an edge over men. Her rebellion against patriarchal authority and the abusive treatment of particular men expressed by the Wife of Bath are really but the projections of her selfish attitude: â€Å"His pleasures were my profit, I concurred† (269). She does not care about anyone but herself and she chooses to display that willingly. She has a self-centered interpretation of the marriage. Oberembt uses the argument that she was only twelve years old in her first marriage and that she was unable to conceive a child with her first husband which could’ve lead to her â€Å"frustration† (Oberembt 288). Through her words, and mostly through her actions, the Wife of Bath expresses her views on a wife’s domination through her own life story. The Wife of Bath’s Tale is an exemplum, providing an answer to the question, â€Å"What do women want? † Chaucer uses the Wife of Bath to explain and give an example that women most desire sovereignty: â€Å"A woman wants the self-same sovereignty / over her husband† (Chaucer 186). The tale is Alison’s idea of the perfect illustration of her point. The Knight gives in to his new old wife and therefore she becomes beautiful in his eyes because she has now been given the right to choose. But if one was to switch the roles of men and women in society, men would become a very meek and uncertain group of people who wouldn’t know how to behave. â€Å"Thus the Wife of Bath comically inverted the conventional sex-linked male and female behaviors† (Oberembt 300). When the Knight of King Arthur lets the old hag make the decision, he abandoned the male’s sovereignty in favor of the woman’s rule: â€Å"My dearest wife / I leave the matter to your wise decision† (Chaucer 291). The Wife of Bath most likely sees her story as what she wishes would happen normally. But by her story, she’s not changing anything or giving examples on how to change the present ways because no man is going to willingly give up his sovereignty only to have his wife rule over him. The Wife of Bath is an early extreme feminist who believed in women having the most power and command over their husbands: â€Å"You make the choice yourself† (291). â€Å"Through the Old Hag, Dame Alice persuades an unreasonable male chauvinist to renounce self-indulgence and to accept the only reasonable norm for human conduct† (Oberembt 300). She is the only person who believes that a woman’s domination will make everyone happy. But on the man’s side of the story, he is forced to give up his masculinity and become sensual only so that his wife can now become masculine. In the Wife of Bath’s Tale, she attempts to convey her message that women want domination, yet with closer analysis one sees that her ideas do not seem to work out well. Chaucer seems to have made the relationship of the tale and the teller to force one to consider Alison’s argument of domination. The argument in contrast to this belief is the idea that the Alison just wants a mutual relationship, one that is of giving and receiving: â€Å"His pleasures were my profit, I concurred† (Chaucer 269). If the Wife of Bath is telling us that marriage is all about having sex with your spouse just so that they could give you fancy things and money in return, there is no sign of a revolutionary idea. McKinley states that â€Å"each spouse’s body becomes the property of the other by virtue of the new marital alliance† (371). If this is the case, then the couple has the right to each other and the right to have sex with each other and there shouldn’t be any type of give and take mentality. In the end of the tale, the old hag relinquishes her power and never really becomes the dominant of the two: â€Å"‘And have I won the mastery? said she† (Chaucer 291). She becomes a passive wife when she gives up her power by giving the knight what he wants. This is because the knight gives her the choice to choose and it seems as though she now has complete control, yet she gives up her power when he wants to have sex with her and she resigns his power and listens to him. The Wife of Bath’s Tale ultimately contradicts Alison’s belief of female domination in that the woman never gains domination over the man: â€Å"My dearest wife / I leave the matter to your wise decision [†¦ ] [Sir,] Do with my life and Death as you think best† (291). The language and acts of self-sacrifice, obedience, and submission seem to suggest the very antithesis of self-actualizing, assertive behavior which feminism [and Alison] has championed (McKinley 373). † Throughout the Wife of Bath’s Prologue, Alison stands strong to the idea that women should have complete control over their husbands. One might think that the tale she would tell contains support to her ideas, but it does not. For in the end, Chaucer shows us that th e Wife of Bath’s idea of domination wouldn’t work because she would eventually give her power up again only after just receiving it. Therefore, Chaucer depicts Alison as a selfish woman who wants authority over her husband and yet in the end he shows how her ideas would never work. One must come to the conclusion that the Wife of Bath only tries to express her belief in a wife’s complete supremacy over their husbands. In the Wife of Bath’s Prologue, Alison uses her experience to verify her theories on a wife’s supremacy. She also uses Biblical examples to support her ideas, such as previous Biblical characters that had multiple spouses. But her life story is evidence to her views and without her personal input one would wonder whether or not her beliefs really would work. In the Wife of Bath’s Tale, Alison most likely sees her story as what she wishes would happen normally. But with a closer look at the details, she’s not changing anything or giving examples on how to change the present ways because no man is going to willingly give up his sovereignty only to have his wife rule over him. Also, the tale ultimately proves Alison wrong because the old hag becomes passive in the end after being given the control. Alison proves her theory wouldn’t work, and Chaucer tries to explain why a woman’s superiority wouldn’t work too well through the old hag and her decision to give into the knight’s request of sex. Question: Discuss about the Concept and Theories of Organizational HRM. Answer: Introduction This essay is focused on developing an understanding of critical theories and concepts of HRM. The essay focuses on four main areas i.e. culture, diversity management, international performance management and training and development in an organization. This essay analyzes the case of an aircraft company which is concerned about organizational profits. For discussion, the company Fly High Aircraft has taken. The CEO of the company is very concerned about the profit of the company. He wants to increase shareholders return on investment. Along with this, the company also wants to gain high share prices in the international market. Fly High Aircraft is operating in Australia having subsidiaries in three more countries i.e. China, Singapore and Vietnam. The company builds and sells aircraft to 50 countries across the world. By the case study, it is observed that there are some issues in the four key areas of the company. This essay has focused on identifying those issues and provided the concepts of organizational HRM to address those issues. The organizational HRM theories and concepts has provided for the factors culture, diversity management, international performance management and training and development in the company (Zeynep, 2013). Diversity management and culture By the case, it can be observed that the teams in the company. It is observed that there is lack of communication between integrated teams and the management of the company. The culture of the company is negative. The staff in the company always resist while implementing any kind of changes in the company. The working relationship across the teams is suffering due to lack of communication. There is the need of modification in the aircraft as the customers are complaining about the lack of quality. Further, in the diversity management, although the company has policy that everyone needs to be respectful in terms of age, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation and physical abilities. But there are many issues in the aircraft related to the values of working with diverse people. Working relationships are not good in the company. Along with this, there is the lack of recruitment of disabilities in China. In other words, in the China branch, company is not following the policy of equality in the business. The HR in the company does not have the set of HRM practices to understand the employees and there is the need to understand the abilities of the employees (Yang Konrad, 2011). Culture and climate are the important part of every organization. Organizational culture can be described as the system of shared meanings having the employees that differentiates one organization to another. Basically, organizational culture provides clear understandings about the things done in the organization. As discussed above, there is the lack of communication in Fly High Aircraft so working relationships is suffering in the company. Staff members are not getting clear instruction and the effectiveness of the company is decreasing. So, there is the need of proper strategic planning for effective business operations. It is not easy to change the culture of the company. The management of the company has to implement the change by changing their own working process (Garg Lepak, 2013). In the organizational HRM theory of culture, there is the relationship between culture and effectiveness. There are four main cultural traits which should be present in the organization i.e. adapt ability, consistency, involvement and mission. In case of Fly High Aircraft, the company must focus on these four factors. Further, there is the need to set the beliefs and values and the managers must communicate with the employees by various methods to understand the behaviors and the perception of the employees. Simply speaking, culture is the soul of the company which decides the success or failure of the company in the market. Culture training is important for the company Fly High Aircraft as not understanding the culture can harm the success of the company. The cultural implications are important for the company otherwise employees of the company will start to quit from the job (Gatewood, Field Barrick, 2015). According to the organizational HRM, it is important to provide equal opportunities to every employee in the company. Diversity management in the company provides shape to the corporate identification to the employees in the organization which is called internal diversity effect. Along with this, it provides the shape to the corporate social responsibility outside of the organization which is called external diversity effect (Becker, Huselid Ulrich, 2001). There is the need of diversity management in the about described company as the policy related to the diversity management is not followed by the company. By the effective diversity management, the company can adopt the policy of corporate identity which will impact on the engagement and the motivation of the employees in the work (Wondrak, 2014). Along with this, this will also shape the brand of the company. By adopting CSR, company will be able to maintain the public relations to shape the brand in the operating market. These a ll the suggestions for the Fly High Aircraft in terms of diversity management will improve the organizational culture and its corporate values (Meyer, 2014). Diversity management can be the tangible asset for the company as by retaining most talented coworkers, company can engage those employees in work for the long time period. So, it is better to have dedicated and loyal employees who develop commitment for the company. Diversity management is important is crucial for the culture of the organization (Kaplan Norton, 2006). International Performance Management By the case, it is observed that the performance management of the company has many issues. Basically, international performance is directly connected to the performance appraisals internationally. But it can be seen that there is the lack of performance appraisals in Fly High Aircraft. There is no performance appraisal system in the company. Headquarter of the company does not consider the economic factors which affect the targets of the business. According to one manager of the company, there is much pressure in Australia due to high cost and higher expectations. There is no effective policy related to the international performance appraisal with no clear measures in the company. It can be seen by the case that the CEO of the company told HR manager that there is no need to measure for managing the business. Performance management is basically a concept in the human resource to identify measure and develop the performance of the employees for the strategic goals of the organization. From the above discussion, it is clear that there is the need of proper performance review to improve the performance of the employees in Fly High Aircraft. There is the cycle of five elements in the performance management which should be adopted by the Fly High Aircraft. Those elements include settings of the objectives, measuring the performance, providing feedback of performance result, reward system on the basis of performance outcome and modifications to activities and objectives (Oke, 2016). There are two main theories underlying the concept of performance management. Those theories are the goal setting theory and expectancy theory. The company Fly High Aircraft should adopt these theories to measure the performance of the employees. The goal setting theory says that company should set individual goals for each employee so that employees can give their best in the work. Further, in the expectancy theory, the performance of the employees depends upon their behavior. The employees should modify their behaviors in such a way that they could be able to achieve the organizational goals. For the employees of the Fly High Aircraft who resist for any kind of change, the expectancy theory will be very helpful. There are many studies which show that the HRM has the positive relationship on the performance of the employees. Under the performance management review, the company can adopt reward system for the employees. There are two types of reward system i.e. financial rewards and non-financial rewards. To achieve the high standard performance in the company, individual should focus on his or her performance. In the development of expatriate performance management, there is the need of standardized performance management in the Fly High Aircraft. For the effective performance management in the Fly High Aircraft, the success depends upon the understanding between the manager and the expatriate and the skillful implementation of performance appraisal in the company. For this manner, appropriate training should be provided to all the expatriates. Company needs to review the performance of the employees time to time. There is the need of lots of improvement in the company Fly High Aircraft becau se if the company wants to grow in the international market then the company should focus on its employees. It is very important for the company to retain the employees otherwise company will face loss in the market. Training and Development Now, in terms of training and development in Fly High Aircraft, it is observed that to do work in the Singapore, China and Vietnam, the company has sent some employees from Australia. HR manager in the company assumed that every employee in the company has same needs when they are going to do work in another country. Further, there is no feedback process for the employees so; they are not able to comment on the effectiveness of the expatriate training. For instance, if an employee is moving to Singapore then there is no training provided by the company to help that employee to adjust in the new surroundings. There are different people in the new country and without any training; it took a long time to adjust in new environment. Further, airlines do not have no systematic workplace planning and programs related to management development. In the company, employees are not aware about their career prospects without career development plans. Along with this, there is the lack of professi onal development in the company. Moving towards new country is not an easy task. It is very stressful so, it is important to provide training to that employee. Training and development session will be helpful for the employee to deal with some issues managing stress, homesickness, larger workload and culture shock. Some stress may be the cause of homesickness and insecurity. So it is important for the company Fly High Aircraft to note that much of stress can de-motivate the employee in the new environment. The expatriate may not adjust in the environment and may under perform in the work. Thus, the success of the expatriates depends upon their ability to adjust in the new country. It is clearly discussed that the employees of the Fly High Aircraft are facing issues related to training and development while going to do work in the new country. There are no training procedures in the company for those employees who are relocated in the branch offices on China, Singapore and Vietnam. There is the need of proper trainin g and development policy in the Fly High Aircraft (Purce, 2014). Company has to provide cross cultural training to the employees. According to the organizational HRM, the aim of training is to improve the relation of employees with the managerial system. When the expatriates are not familiar with the culture, custom and the work habit then training will be helpful for them to understand all these things. Further, effective training programs can improve the overall management system of the company. It is important for the company to train the employees for attaining future goals of the company (Hendry, 2012). There is the process of cross cultural training which must be adopted by the Fly High Aircraft. The process of the training and development is given below in the figure. There are two phases of expatriate training i.e. preparatory training for foreign assignments and re-entry training. Fly High Aircraft has to adopt some training strategy to bridge gap between the abilities of individual and the responsibilities of their job (Wilson Brown, 2012). The strategies which should be adopted by the company are described in figure: First of all, it is important to identify the objectives of the training. The reason of the Training can be new culture, environment and lots of challenges which might be faced by the Expatriate in the new country. After that company should identify the job role and responsibility which have to perform by the employee. The training needs must be determined by the HR in the cross cultural area. Further, the goals must be established for the Expatriate so that they can be motivated to achieve that goal. At last, the effective training and development program will be developed and delivered to the employee for his or her growth. The company should not only implement the training program but also it should evaluate the effectiveness of the program (Goodman, 2014). There is the need to train the expatriates so that they can adopt the new environment, culture and responsibilities easily. Expatriates need additional training to prepare them to achieve the goals and objectives of the career. So, all the training methods are effective in the training for Expatriates. During the relocation, Expatriates can face many issues and challenges. During that time, there can be the issues of communication. So, the use of internet is the best option for them which will be helpful in reducing the barriers and limited opportunities for them. The company should develop mentoring program for Expatriates and this should be done by the HR and training department (Voorde et al, 2010). After implementing the mentoring program, the Expatriates will be able to improve their skills in the new environment. From the above discussion, it is clear that there is the need of proper training for the Expatriates as the company is seeking for more profit in the market. So, it is necessary to retain the employees for the business operations (Barrett, 2014). Conclusion This easy is focused on the organizational concepts and theories in terms of four core areas i.e. culture, performance management, diversity management and training and development. From the above discussion it is observed that Fly High Aircraft is the famous airline working in the Australia. The company is seeking for more profit in the market but the problem is that the company is not following the organizational HRM concepts. All the policies and management are not effective and the system of the company is not working properly. If the company wants to grow in both national as well as international market, then the company has to do some effective changes in the business operations. The organizational theories and concepts provide the framework to the organizations to manage the business operations effectively in the operating market. In last, for effective management of the Fly High Aircraft, there are some recommendations for the company. The company should adopt those recommend ations for future business operations. For managing diversity in the company, managers should focus on the internal and external diversity management. Company should provide language training to the staff to improve diversity management. For managing cultural issues, company should adopt proper strategic planning for effective business operations. Managers should implement the change by changing their own working process (Wooton Horne, 2010). For performance management, managers should adopt the two theories i.e. goal setting theories and expectation theories. Religion In North American Towns Religion has played a vital role in the settling of many pre-industrial North American towns and cities. In fact, religion proved to be one of the main reasons Europeans broke their affiliation with the dictatorial and the monarchial rule in Europe and came to settle the Americas. Generally, these particular religious settlers incorporated town-planning ideas developed in Europe and translated them into their particular beliefs. However, some specific and influential settlers broke away from the norm in a progressive attempt to invent new societies in a new land based on accumulated knowledge. John Reps, the pre-eminent American historian on town planning has this to say about those who strayed from the common ideals. "Almost from the beginning of settlement, America attracted a variety of reformers, utopians, and pariah religious sects. These dedicated... groups shunned existing cities with their temptations and distractions, preferring to create settlements in harmony with their religious, economic, or social convictions." In this paper, I will analyze and compare the influence of two different religions in the settling of their respective towns. The first will be The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as the Mormons, and the second is the Church of the United Brethren, also known as the Moravians. THE MORMON MISSION The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a Christian religion that came into existence during the early 19th-century American movement of religious revivalism called the Second Great Awakening. Officially, Joseph Smith, who is recognized as a prophet in modern Mormon teachings, founded the church in 1830 after he said that God had spoken to him. In that same year, he organized his first followers in New York. From that point on, as they marched westward, he experimented in building towns that revolved around "...order, unity, and community." These values were viewed as supreme in the prophet's ideal society, and these same values were at odds with values that were characteristic of many cities and towns already existing in America at that time. It is said that his aim was to realize the Christian commonwealth that had been the ideal of John Winthrop in Puritan New England. According to one account, Winthrop at one time had said to the colonists, "Wee must be knit together in this work as one man." This one statement seems to provide the basis of Smith's convictions when he set out to form new towns in hopes of turning people on to his religion. The Law of Consecration and Stewardship was outlined by Joseph Smith in 1831, and marked the beginning of Mormon ?communitarianism.' This law "...was a prescription for transforming the highly individualistic economic order of Jacksonian America into a system characterized by economic equality, socialization of surplus incomes, freedom of enterprise, and group economic self-sufficiency." Basically, what this meant was that all members of the church and hereafter, the community, would deed all of his/her property to the bishop of the church. On top of this, the community was to farm and cultivate the land together and share equally the crops. In turn, the bishop would appropriate these assets out based on the need of an individual or family residing within the community. Doctrines of the church such as these held a paralleled relationship to the planning of the towns. By early 1831, Joseph Smith and his following had moved west to Kirtland, Ohio. Kirtland was an ideal spot for Americans seeking prosperity given its ripe location for trade as well as agriculture. The land in Ohio had richer soil than that found along the Atlantic coast, and the climate was much milder. A good reason for this can be attributed to Ohio's gentle topography. This was beneficial to the Mormon people who relied on farming and trade. The location was in close proximity to both Lake Erie, which provided the transportation to the East, and the Ohio Canal, which connected to the Ohio River and hence the entire Mississippi River system. The Mormons however did not take full advantage of this beneficial location for settlement, as they left after only a short period of time. Kirtland was a settlement where many firsts occurred in the Mormon religion, and it was a settlement that would aid Mormons in molding future settlements. Gene wants Finny to be forced down to his level so that he can compete with him and not just lose to him.Gene tries to please Finny. Although he knows that by doing so, he is acting against every instinct of his behavior. He also allows Finny to take him away from his studies, which are v ery important to Gene. He concludes that he should not feel any gratitude towards his roommate. Since everything seems to come so easily and naturally to Finny, especially his athletic abilities, Gene grows insanely jealous of him. The jealousy is carefully hidden inside until he can stand it no more. He causes Finny to fall out of the tree, crippling him for life. By hurting him, Gene could bring him down to his level. After the accident, Gene even sees himself as Finny. He dresses in his roommate's clothes and says, I was Phineas, Phineas to the life. He also becomes the crippled Finny, refusing to participate in sports, since Finny cannot do it. After the accident, Gene is riddled with guilt and shame. During summer vacation, he decides he must confess that he has caused the accident to Finny. He goes to his home, where he is recovering, and tries to tell Finny that he has bounced him out of the tree. Finny refuses to believe the story, for he trusts Gene as his best friend in life. When Finny returns to Devon, he tells Gene that he is going prepare him for the next Olympics. The agreement is that Finny will coach Gene in sports, and Gene will coach Finny in his studies. It is more than two-thousand-year-old. Next we went to see the carvings of Hindu gods and goddesses on stone slabs. We were really surprised to see the wooden slabs changing into tone. From the Qutab we went to Tughlaqabad. Here an old city of Delhi, founded by Tughlaq Kings, was once situated. Now it lies in ruins. Then we proceeded to Hauz Khas which was the residence of kings. We relaxed for sometime on the green lawns. We had our lunch here and refreshed ourselves with tea. Next we went to Humayuns Tomb where Emperor Humayun lies buried. We appreciated the Mughal art and architecture. There are graves of the Mughals nearby. Our next place of visit was Kotla Feroze Shah. Feroze Shah Bahadurs tomb and a mosque are built in it. This place is known for the Ashoka pillar, which was brought from Meerut. Next we saw the ruins of Old Fort. It was started by Humayun but was completed by Sher Shah Suri. In the end we went to the Red Fort. It is a fine building of majestic grandeur. There we saw Diwan-i-Khas. It shows the architectural taste of the great Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan. The glory of the ancient ages is writ large on its face. We visited the museum inside the fort. Many things of historical value are displayed here. We learnt a lot from the visit and eagerly desired to have another educational tour of Delhi.

Parents are not always heard, and often schools are not run the way they would prefer. In this article parents are given a voice and a chance to be heard on what they feel is important for their children’s health. In this article the researchers survey the parents and get their opinions on what they feel needs to be done to help the fight against childhood obesity. Problem to solve: Childhood obesity is the main focus in this article.This paper helps to give the parents their view of how schools are dealing with childhood obesity. Childhood obesity has been on a steady rise over the past few years. Approximately over 9 million children are obese and that number continues to rise (Murphy & Polivka, 2007). Treating this di sease can be as easy as more physical activity and a healthier diet. An independent variable is a variable that can be wielded by the researcher. It is basically a hypothesized in order to influence or affect the dependent variable. The independent variable is measured from the researcher. The researcher assigns an experimental or a controlled condition to the participants. The independent variables would be the surveys and what they say prior to the participants taking the survey (Murphy & Polivka, 2007).The dependent variables would be the participants that partake in the survey (Murphy & Polivka, 2007). Theoretical Framework: The theoretical framework is used in research to give details or to create an outline of what the possible actions may be. It is used to try and connect the aspects of the topic. The theoretical framework that was conducted in this article was what the relationship between a parent’s perception of their child’s BMI and obesity and what the schools role is in preventing as well as treating the children’s obesity issues (Murphy & Polivka, 2007).Literature Review: Literature review is important because it allows the researcher to find out what has already been discovered and what has not. Information regarding the report investigation. Determining and critical analyzing the condition of the targeted work branch requires personal investigation approaches. Thus, this researcher has interviewed several employees of the said work branch to determine their opinion and views regarding the work condition and environment in the targeted structure. In addition, this researcher has also reviewed and analyzed several work documents and manuals pertaining to employee management approach of the company.    III. Results of the investigations. Thus, the said investigation has determined that the Roanoke Branch of Phoenix Advertising is currently experiencing several employee management and employee relations problems, which are significantly affecting the production and quality of service of the said office. Among its problems is the significant decrease in the morale of the employee particularly in their dedication for their work, quality of work environment and the dissatisfaction with the services and performance of their superiors. This in turn has caused higher stress level for the employees thus, further aggravating their discontentment with their work conditions. In addition, this problem has also affected the production rate of the said branch as the rate of absenteeism and turnovers have increased to a detrimental level. Other contributory factor to the discontented wok nature of the employees are the lack of communication between the body of employee and the management, increased in the work load for each employee, and the   increasing unpaid overtime dues to the employees. Recommendations To address the investigated employee management and relation in the employee’s body of the Roanoke Branch of the Phoenix Advertising, this researcher recommends the following approaches. A. Revising the hiring and recruitment procedures particularly drawing out a clearer and more comprehensive work contract that elaborates the rights and privileges of the employees to encourage more applicants thus enabling the administration to expand the workforce pool in the Roanoke Branch. B. Establish experimental work system to determine the most convenient for the employees and the most effective for the company’s production cycle. Included in this concept are the aspects of employee scheduling employing a fixed but semi-rotational work schedule for each employee and shortening the work period through extending or establishing employee vacations and day offs. C. Reducing the workload of the employees through hiring in part-time personnel especially during work peak seasons to accommodate the increasing workload and increase the work capacity of the Roanoke branch. D. Formulating grievance and dispute procedures to expand the communication aspect between the management and employees wherein employees’ views and opinions can be expressed and will be duly addressed and incorporated in the development plans of the Roanoke branch. De discussie over het multiculturele karakter van de Nederlandse samenleving keert herhaaldelijk terug. Eà ©n van de redenen hiervoor is de toename van immigranten en vluchtelingen uit niet-westerse landen naar Nederland. Prof. dr. Lotty Eldering, emeritus hoogleraar Interculturele Pedagogiek aan de Universiteit Leiden, heeft vijfentwintig jaar lang onderzoek gedaan onder allochtone gezinnen. Naar aanleiding van dit onderzoek heeft ze begin 2002 een overzichtwerk geschreven, waarin aandacht wordt besteed aan zowel de huidige (opvoedings-)situatie van allochtone ouders en kinderen, als hun voorgeschiedenis en de daarbij behorende cultuur als hun verdere leefsituatie. Dit boek heet Cultuur en Opvoeding. Interculturele pedagogiek vanuit ecologisch perspectief. Niet eerder was er een studieboek verschenen over het onderwerp interculturele pedagogiek. Lotty Eldering is een van de eerste schrijfsters die zulk grondige informatie verschafte over de nieuw bevolkingsgroepen die in Nederland binnenkomen. Het doel van dit boek is het bij te dragen aan het tot stand komen van een beter inzicht in de culturele orià «ntatie en sociale positie van allochtone ouders en jeugdigen. Daarnaast is het de bedoeling de culturele sensitiviteit, ten opzicht van deze mensen, van haar lezers te vergroten. Het boek is bestemd voor een groot publiek, namelijk studenten en docenten die zich willen verdiepen in de opvoeding en leefwijze van allochtone jongeren, praktijkwerkers, onderzoekers en anderen die behoefte hebben aan kennis en inzicht van cultuur op de opvoeding. Daarnaast is het ook handig als naslagwerk te gebruiken. In Cultuur en opvoeding wordt de manier van opvoeden van allochtonen in Nederland duidelijk besproken, zodat je er een goed beeld van kan vormen. Telkens wordt hierbij ook gesproken over de islamitische en de hindoestaanse manier van opvoeden. De religie en tradities van deze groepen worden hierbij ook behandeld om een beeld te krijgen hoe zich dit in de Nederlandse samenleving inpast. Ook wordt hier een vergelijking gemaakt met de Nederlandse gewoontes en de christelijke opvoeding. Nederland wordt hier gezien als multiculturele samenleving, door toename van het aantal immigranten en vluchtelingen die afkomstig zijn uit niet-westerse samenlevingen. Wat hier allemaal bij komt kijken wordt beschreven te samen met de waarden en normen in Nederland. Eldering schrijft vanuit een ecologisch perspectief. Dit perspectief gaat er van uit dat de sociale en culturele context van het gezin, de omgeving, grote invloed heeft op de opvoeding en ontwikkeling van het kind. Tot nu toe is het ecologisch raamwerk voornamelijk gebruikt bij het bestuderen van een stereoculturele omgeving en niet, zoals Eldering doet, bij het bestuderen van kinderen die opgroeien in een multiculturele samenleving. Eldering beschrijft kritisch het ecologische model en het developmental niche model (ontwikkelingsgebieden) van respectievelijk Bronfenbrenner Harkness en Super. Cultuur en opvoeding geeft de informatie erg beschrijvend weer. Het leven van allochtonen in Nederland wordt beschreven en geÃÆ' ¯llustreerd aan de hand van voorbeelden in aparte kaders. Door het boek loopt over het algemeen een goed volgbare rode draad die de lezer langs al die aspecten leidt. De indeling van het boek verloopt op een logische manier, van het grote algemene (wat zijn allochtonen, waar komen ze vandaan) naar het meer uitgewerkte (hoe wordt er opgevoed, welk risico- en probleemgedrag komen er voor). Doordat de voorgeschiedenis en de cultuur in de landen van herkomst, van de allochtonen gezinnen die in dit boek worden behandeld, eerst toe te lichten kom je tot een beter beeld van deze gezinnen. Ook verklaard dit veel van wat er in de rest van het boek volgt. Deze twee punten hebben namelijk nog steeds invloed op zowel de opvoeding als de andere dagelijkse dingen in de allochtone gezinnen wanneer deze in Nederland wonen. Na een voorwoord van de schrijfster zelf, volgt een inleiding over de interculturele pedagogiek en het gebruik van dit boek. Hierin worden drie theoretische perspectieven, namelijk het ecologische model (invloed omgeving op de opvoedingssituatie), historisch en vergelijkend en acculturatie (dichterbij elkaar komen van mensen uit verschillende culturen) en cultuurverschillen, genoemd die gebruikt zijn in dit boek als richtlijnen. In hoofdstuk 2 worden de identificatiecriteria, herkomst en migratie van allochtonen in Nederland beschreven. De meeste aandacht gaat hier uit naar de (Creoolse en Hindoestaanse) Surinamers, de Marokkanen en de Turken. In hoofdstuk 3 gaat het om het theoretische kader. Hier worden de integratie, het multiculturalisme, het ecologische raamwerk (met hierin het ecologische model van Bronfenbrenner en de devolopment niche van Harkness en Super), de cultuur en de risicofactoren (zowel in het algemeen als speciaal voor allochtone jongeren) beschreven. De religie staat centraal in het volgende hoofdstuk. Hier worden de Islam en het HindoeÃÆ' ¯sme verder uitgewerkt, van het ontstaan tot de komst van dit geloof in Nederland. In hoofdstuk 5 draait het om de maatschappelijke participatie en de culturele orià «ntatie van de allochtonen hier in Nederland. Hier komen onder andere de sociale positie, taal en de banden met het land van herkomst aan bod. In hoofdstuk 6 gaat het boek vervolgens verder met de crossculturele verschillen in opvoeding. Hier wordt het socialisatiemodel van Kagità §ibasi en visies op kinderen en hun ontwikkelingen behandeld en de punten opvoeding, leren en identiteit worden nader uitgelegd. In hoofdstuk 7 gaat Eldering daarop door, want hier staat de opvoeding van allochtonen gezinnen centraal. Dit is geschreven vanuit de allochtonen gezinnen (Marokkaans, Turks, Surinaams) zelf. De adolescentie is het onderwerp van hoofdstuk 8. Hier gaat het over relaties (met ouders en leeftijdsgenoten), vrije tijd en vriende n, school en werk, seksualiteit en huwelijk. In het laatste hoofdstuk wordt tot besluit de risicofactoren en het probleemgedrag behandeld. Hier gaat het over wat een belangrijke basis is wat een jongere nodig heeft, welke risicofactoren er zijn en met welke psychosociale problemen ze te maken kunnen hebben. De manier van schrijven, de indeling van het boek en de vele voorbeelden, van zowel tekst als illustraties, maken dit boek tot een leerzaam boek die ook prettig is om te lezen. Wel mist er zo nu en dan wat structuur. Wat tussen hoofdstuk 6 en hoofdstuk 7 wel duidelijk is, is tussen andere hoofdstukken sporadisch. Tussen hoofdstuk   6 en 7 is een duidelijk verband, er wordt in het eerste hoofdstuk een achtergrond geschetst voor de tweede. Vrijwel alles waar aan gedacht wordt bij het denken aan allochtone mensen in Nederland, komen aan de orde. Aspecten die hier worden bedoeld zijn bijvoorbeeld religie, manier van opvoeden, sociale positie en andere cultureel specifieke dingen. Het is een interessant boek voor diegene die geÃÆ' ¯nteresseerd zijn in cultuurverschillen hier in Nederland. Alles bij elkaar maakt dit informatieve boek compleet.

Heart of Darkness Darkness permeates every circumstance, scene, and character in Joseph Conrad's novella, Heart of Darkness. Darkness symbolizes the moral confusion that Charlie Marlow encounters, as well as the moral reconciliation he has within himself while searching for Kurtz. Marlow's morals are challenged numerous times throughout the book; on the Congo river and when he returns to Brussels. Charlie Marlow characterizes the behavior of the colonialists with, "The flabby, pretending, weak-eyed devil of a rapacious and pitiless folly," (25). Marlow distinguishes "the devil" from violence, greed, and desire. He suggests that the basic evil of imperialism is not that it perpetrates violence against native peoples, or that it is motivated by greed. But that "the flabby, weak-eyed devil," the imperialists, seem to be distinguished by being foolish and unaware. Marlow is appalled by the apathetic attitude towards the sight of death, of the colonials aboard the Nellie. At the grove of the first station, Marlow is troubled by the sight of a man curled up, dying. "I saw a face near my hand†¦black bones†¦white flicker in the depth of the orbs, which died out quickly," (27). Marlow's horror at the grove suggests that the true evils of this colonial company are dehumanizing and deathly. Marlow offers a dying man a few pieces of a biscuit, and despite the fact tha t he is not particularly compassionate, the situation troubles him greatly. During section two of Heart of Darkness, Marlow's professional skills, morals, and work ethics are contrasted with those of the other company employees. To Marlow, work represents the fulfillment of a contract between himself and the company he is working for. Repairing the st... .... His dishonesty was sparked by having compassion for others. Although dishonesty was something Marlow found distasteful at the start of his journey, he felt no remorse in lying to the Intended in Brussels. There were also some other survey organizations published similar results, stated that the winner was Kiowa-Kali, such as R & D Compass, ISMS (Useful Musician Research and Consulting), and RI. Meanwhile, some other survey organizations indicated otherwise. A quick count conducted by Upstairs (Center for Policy Studies and Development Strategy) cleared that Parabola-Hat won the election by 52. 05%, whereabouts-J gained 47. 95 percent.Other survey organizations that declared Parabola- Hat as the winner were National Survey Institute (LSI) and the Indonesian Voice Network (SSI). These different quick count results were followed by announcement of victory by both candidates, which was the first time in Indonesia history, both competing candidates claimed as the winner. Moreover, supporters of both cam ps had celebrated their victories in separated places. Parabola's withdrawal from election process Another surprising event happened on July 22, 2014, when General Elections Commission was announcing the recapitulation of the presidential election results.While the recapitulation was still ongoing, Parabola announced that he had withdrawn his presidential candidacy after denouncing the election process as undemocratic. The consolidation of political parties supporting Parabola and their actions in Parliament Competition between Parabola and Kiowa did not stop when the General Elections Commission stated that Kiowa-Koala was the winner of the presidential election. Parabola along with his supporting parties filed an election disputes to Constitutional Court, though the court finally rejected their petition.In parliament, the parties that were supporting Parabola also took several actions that made Indonesian politics became unstable. They asked the Parliament legalize the draft of a Law regarding the local elections. In this new law, direct elections for provincial governors, district chiefs and mayors were eliminated, replaced by appointment by local elected legislatures. There were many opinions from local or international institutions aid that this was a big hit for Indonesian democracy. Indonesian democracy that had been growing in SUB era, was experiencing a substantial setback.The most noticeable effects might be the impacts on the price of stock in Indonesian Stock Exchange. Despite there were some quick counts that stated that the winner wasParabola, since the reputation and credibility of tho se survey organizations were questionable, market believed that Kiowa would win the presidential election. On the day when General Elections Commission was announcing the recapitulation of the presidential election results, the index was slightly decreasing. It might be influenced by Parabola's statement that he had withdrawn from the election process. This statement was perceived as sign of the upcoming political instability in Indonesia. Moreover, on that day, Parabola clearly stated that there was systematic violation of democracy inducted by General Elections Commission.The clearest evident how market reacted to the political condition might be reflected on the price of stock following what happened in the Parliament in the first week of October. After the Parliament passed the law regarding local elections, which automatically eliminated direct elections for local governments, the stocks dropped significantly. Many political analysts stated that by eliminating direct elections, Indonesian democracy had moved backwards. The influence is channeled through the expectation of business players in the market. When the condition in a country is stable, investors are likely to be willing to invest their money in that country. On the other hand, political instability might frighten investors to put their money in a country, resulting â€Å"sell-actions† that eventually pushes the stock price.This condition happened in Indonesia recently, following the presidential elections that was won by Kiowa-Koala, resulted in the decreasing Of most stock price in Indonesian Stock Exchange, including the stock price of Golden Agric Resources. However, there is still optimism about political condition in the future. Kiowa;Kali have an important role to stabilize the political condition and create supporting environment for business. On the other hand, industry might also have to adapt with the changes happen.
